During this time, the eighth century before Christ, prophets spoke out from both the north and the south, warning the people of the imminent judgment of God. The prophetic message proclaimed God’s indictment on the people. God’s people had violated the covenant by their idolatry, their social injustice, and their religious formalism. “You have broken the covenant,” the prophets charged. “You must repent! If there is no repentance, judgment will come!” And judgment came!
